This study has practical implications for the theoretical advancement of university entrepreneurial capability. The findings indicate that entrepreneurial capability significantly affects the performance of the private university positively.

The analysis of the relationship between entrepreneurial capability and university performance revealed β =. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to test the model. The quantitative data was collected from a sample size of 329 respondents stratified into the academic and non-academic staff. The unit of analysis of the study are the private universities within Nairobi County. It seeks to understand how private universities in Kenya adopt entrepreneurial capability as a strategy to assist them maintain good performance. The purpose of this study is to establish the effects of entrepreneurial capability (unbundled as market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, marketing capability, and competitive orientation) on private universities performance in Kenya. This corroborates findings in other researches on similar subjects, and identifies gaps for further study in optimum resource utilisation. The study found that ordinary or junk resources can be a source of competitiveness for 2 higher learning institutions. An extended resource theory study opens up avenues for higher education institutions in their quest for sustainability and relevance in the development discourse.

This paper makes a case for Catholic higher education institutions of emerging economies particularly Africa,focusing on Kenya, on how they can optimally leverage on available resources for competitiveness. How then can these ordinary resources be utilised competitively for superior performance?. Higher education institutions have in most cases, ordinary or what may pass as junk resources. Most economies of the South, especially Sub-Saharan Africa, have resources which will not neatly fit into conventional strategic assets category. In this ongoing thought and study, resources utilisation by institutions of higher learning has been gaining currency as the deciding factor in the puzzle.

There is anxiety in emerging economies of the South, which appear to have missed the flight of welfare improvement for their citizens. This is to be understood in the broader matrix of resources, which in their limitedness and absence in many cases, make delivery an uphill task. Issues of quality, affordability, accessibility and relevance are key in ensuring that institutions of higher learning deliver on this expectation.This is turn spawns innovation and entrepreneurship, the key ingredients in the constraints and opportunities equation of economic development. As hubs of knowledge generation and management, onerous responsibilities are justifiably placed on them for positive impact. There has been increased focus on the tangible and meaningful contributions of higher education institutions to the economic well being of nations in Africa.
